Amidst the deadly outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic across the nation, people are now facing the wrath of financial instability that has emerged as one of the outcomes of the national lockdown. Thousands of people have been rendered jobless owing to the nature of their work and the same has created a serious impact on their livelihood.

Considering the present situation, the Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh have come up with a scheme by the name of “The Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim COVID-19 Financial Assistance Scheme”. The said scheme was formulated in a collective meeting of the Bar Council of the mentioned states on 23.04.2020.

A press release regarding the same has been issued on 27.04.2020 and was found stating as follows, “The Advocates have no social security. They are professionals and not salaried employees. Most of the Advocates are not financially sound and they are maintaining their livelihood by means of daily earnings.”

Under the formulated scheme, any lawyer enrolled with the Bar Council of Assam, Nagaland, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh or Sikkim who is in dire need of financial assistance due to the lockdown shall be provided with adequate financial assistance. Furthermore, the lawyer seeking financial help must be in active legal practice and not have any other source of income in order to avail the benefits of the scheme. Also, the total savings of such person should not have exceeded Rs. 30,000/- (Rupees Thirty Thousand Only/-) as on 15.04.2020.

The application for availing the benefits of the scheme should be written in the prescribed format available on the website of the Bar Council and the same should be sent to the Chairman of the Council via email at barcouncilofnecovid19aid@gmail.com or in person or by speed post,  registered post or via courier on or before 07.05.2020.
