The Ministry of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises vide press release on 04.05.2020 informed that Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) noticed that certain unscrupulous business firms are manufacturing and selling personal protective equipment (PPE) kits fraudulently using its registered trademark “Khadi India”. The KVIC gave clarification that it has not launched any PPE kit in the market. The KVIC further, clarifies that the fake PPE kits being sold are made of non-woven material like polyester and polypropylene which are neither Khadi products nor KVIC approved products. The KVIC states that it specifically uses double-twisted hand spun, hand-woven Khadi fabric for its products.
Shri Vinai Kumar Saxena, Chairman, KVIC, informed that the KVIC has developed its own PPE kit made of Khadi fabric but it is still at various levels of testing and confirms that they have not yet launched the Khadi PPE kits in the market. He further, said that selling of PPE kits in pretext of brand name ‘Khadi India’ is not only illegal but it also raises risk to doctors, diagnostic and paramedic staff who are dealing with cases of Corona disease on a routine basis. He also said that KVIC is contemplating legal action against the fraudsters.
The fake PPE kits were manufactured by one Delhi based ‘Nichia Corporation’, was brought to notice of Deputy CEO, KVIC Shri Satya Narayana who informed that KVIC has not launched any PPE kits or outsourced to any private agency. Further, it is clarified that at present KVIC is only manufacturing and distributing specially designed Khadi face masks which confirms to the highest safety standards. They are using double-twisted Khadi fabric for manufacturing these masks which helps retain 70% of the moisture content inside. Further, these masks are breathable, washable, biodegradable and made hand-spun and hand-woven Khadi fabric.
