The Press Council of India on 23.04.2020 took Suo Moto cognizance of the alleged attack on Mr. Arnab Goswami.
Mr. Arnab Goswami, editor-in-chief and owner of news channel, Republic TV was allegedly attacked by two men while on his way back home in the early hours of 23.04.2020. An F.I.R regarding the same was filed which stated that Mr. Goswami and his wife were driving back home from work when two assailants drew abreast of their car on a scooter, banged on the driver’s side window and threw ink on it from a bottle.
The Press Council of India reprimanded the alleged attack and asserted the fact that every citizen of the country including a journalist has the right to express their opinions and that even if many may not agree to ones opinion; violence could not be the answer to it. “Violence is not the answer even against bad journalism” stated the Council.
Furthermore, the Council directed the Government of Maharashtra to submit the merits of the case and thereby take appropriate action against the alleged perpetrators.
Mr. Arnab Goswami had recently garnered criticism from Congress leaders for his remarks aimed at their party president, Sonia Gandhi during a TV discussion on the Palghar incident wherein three men were lynched in open by a group of people.
The PCI directing the State Government in the present matter stated as follows, “The Council condemns this attack and expects from the State Government to apprehend the perpetrators of crime and they be brought to justice immediately”.
